Wild black currant is a small shrub that grows in a variety of wooded habitats throughout our area---hardwood swamps, tamarack swamps, lowland forests, as well as upland, maple-basswood forests. It prefers a rich loam or black, organic soil. It does not have prickles. It is an alternate host of the white pine blister rust.
